The Flint Hills

The Flint Hills are a band of hills located in Eastern Kansas. Created about 250 million years ago during the Permian period when much of the midwest was covered by shallow seas. As a result of this, much of the Flint Hills are composed of limestone and shale with fossils of prehistoric sea creatures. The Flint Hills are named for cobbles of flint-like rock that shines through the tall prairie grass. Today the Flint Hills are sparsely populated and contain most of the remaining prairie in the world.
